It's 7:30AM.
A writer lies on a bed, with her head placed next to a small air conditioner that is sat on a desk chair positioned to the immediate right of the bed. A street cleaner slowly screams its way up the road, throwing out decibels in every direction.
The Writer cracks open one eye.
She flops an arm over the side of the mattress to gauge the ambient temperature, then groans and shuts the eye again.
A combination of music and coffee usually gets this particular writer out of bed and in front of a keyboard, but it's 25⁰C and no sane human being pushes their core temperature higher with a hot beverage on a day like this. With a sigh, she commands her soggy brain to move her equally unimpressed body downstairs in whatever fashion it can manage. She wipes the sweat off her brow. How people can survive in hotter countries she does not know - anything above 16⁰C in the morning is appalling and should be rectified immediately.
Once downstairs, she begins to make coffee anyway. The news is on TV in the living room; 'Temperatures expected to soar to 40⁰C in some parts of the UK today...'.
She shudders in horror, applies headphones to ears, and sets the Beatles playing on Spotify. As if mocking the disgruntled Writer, it chooses 'Here Comes The Sun'.
She puts the coffee in the freezer. Caffeine will have to be later.
'Here comes the sun, doo 'n' doo doo...'
She fetches her notebook and an Edison fountain pen, Persimmon Swirl.
'Here comes the sun, 'n' I say...'
It's out of ink. This precipitates an unwanted trip back upstairs to fill it with Graf Von Faber-Castell Violet Blue.
'It's all right...'
'It's not' thinks the Writer. 'These lyrics need editing'.
'Little darling, the smiles are melting off their faces...'
Much better.
This is a true story, and the Writer is, surprise! Me. I can't deal with excessive heat like others I know who inexplicably love 38⁰C... each to their own! It made it quite hard to get any work done since I was busy casually expiring in the impromptu oven that England made of itself this week.
KraftyCats will resume its normal schedule very soon!
