Pen Storage Solutions

It happens to everyone who uses fountain pens eventually...

You think you only need one fountain pen at first. Then you realise you quite like it, and buy a few others with different nib sizes. Then a friend has a few old unused pens and since you've just started collecting them, you're the perfect recipient, or you decide to start reviewing them and consequently end up with ballpoints, rollerballs and every type of writing instrument on the face of the planet!

Our pen collections may give us joy, but when you have more than ten, you need to find good places to store them so they aren't damaged or lost. Yes, keeping them loose in a drawer may work, but you run the risk of scratching and scuffing the pens.

The easiest option is a pen case with loops. This could be a cheaper one from Amazon, or a more expensive product from a smaller manufacturer such as Galen Leather or Nock Co.

I personally love leather cases for their durability, and the unique aging process they undergo which makes your case truly one-of-a-kind. However, a canvas/polyester/other fabric case should hold up just as well if it is good quality. They are also vegan.

Unfortunately, pen cases aren't the best option for displaying pens as they're usually zipped up inside.

If you want to show off your exquisite taste in fine writing instruments, you need a display case. Many woodworkers have websites where they sell these, and you can also find them on Etsy. Some companies, such as Pelikan, sell small chests of drawers to store as many as 48 pens.

Or, you can Improvise.

I do love old wooden boxes, cigar boxes especially. Is it because they can be turned into guitars? I'm not sure. One thing I do know is that they can be easily converted to pen boxes. If they come with an insert to hold cigars, then it's even better because they will also keep pens in place and prevent them scratching each other. If not, you'll have to install some kind of divider yourself. Of course, due to the fact that most cigar cases have wooden lids, you won't be able to see the pens inside unless you go one step further and add a clear lid.

But these are only a few possible ideas. There are plenty of 3D printed pen stands out there, it's just a matter of what will suit you best. Get looking on Etsy, and chances are that you'll be able to find the best storage solution for you, and you'll be supporting small businesses too. The options are almost endless!
