Review: Montblanc Royal Blue

Updated: Jun 1, 2022

Every fountain pen collector needs at least one good blue ink in their collection. The preferred shade varies from person to person - some like bright, vivid blues, while others favour more muted blue-blacks. I always go for the brighter blues, and this Montblanc ink doesn't disappoint.

In fact, it has just become one of my favourite blue inks because it is vibrant without apearing too gaudy. Before the ink is dry, it looks quite dark, leaning towards black. When it dries, however, the blue lightens and you are left with a beautiful colour in which you can spot quite a lot of shading.

You don't even need to use a wide nib for shading to be visible! I filled a medium Franklin-Christoph with Royal Blue, and even though the medium nib is closer to a fine I could still see all the shading in the ink.

If the camera would show it, that would be great! In real life, it varies from a light blue to a more intense one.

It also has a good consistency (very similar to Diamine) not too wet, not too dry. It does not feather or bleed on Kunisawa paper or my Tools to Liveby calligraphy pad - both very smooth papers, but this isn't a troublesome ink and should work well with most papers you choose.

If you want a reliable and attractive blue ink, Montblanc has you covered!
